Domingo Bango Bongo!

The first ever Domingo Bango Bongo! party was rather good fun on Sunday (thanks goes to Tom & Toby and everyone who made it down), you just can’t beat DJ’ing by the beach as the sun falls from the sky, it was meant to finish at 9pm, it carried on a tad longer..  Quality outweighed quantity in terms of bums on seats but a hoot was had by all and it was a chance to share some wonderful music both new & old; Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Dodo

Rumours on the beach are that it will become a monthly affair at different locations with of course a discerning music policy that avoids all the minimal crap played in Barcelona where finding decent house music is comparable to Dodo hunting.

Three tunes that made grown adults ‘Bango Bongo’ were:

Dolle Jolle – Balearic Incarnation (Todd Terje Remix)

Wagon Cookin’ – Mallorca

Lamont Dozier – Going Back to My Roots

Until the next DBB…

Blurred Sound

The other day I was having a cup of tea listening to the radio (as you do) pleasantly tapping my foot along to a cheerful lazy summers day tune which carried a heavy London accent, more of a talking style than singing and I found myself thinking ‘I don’t know this Blur song?’

One Fing 'n' AnuvverSo I waited for the presenter to share the love and ‘stone the crows’ it turns out it wasn’t the recently reformed Hyde Park gigging 90′s Britpop band at all, it was in fact a track by the rockney cockney charmers Chas & Dave from their 1975 album One Fing ‘n’ Anuvver an new guilty pleasure album I don’t have yet.. Cor blimey, confusing those two would you Adam and eve it..

Have a listen to Chas & Dave – Old Dog & Me below and see what you think..

Labi SiffreA lesser known fact (but one of those pub ‘did you know?’s) is that Dave Peacock (Dave..) played bass guitar on the seminal ‘I Got the…’  (from the album Remember My Song) by Labi Siffre which is an amazing musical pearl in my book and has since been heavily sampled by the modern day artist, most notably Eminem in his chart topping single ‘My Name Is’.  Now that is bizarre..

Burning Ears 4

Back with a summer splash Burning Ears Part 4 follows below and watch out for more music orientated content as billshakes.com goes under musical refurbishment, it just seems like the right thing to do:

Stevie Wonder – All I Do (Todd Terje Edit)

Stevie WonderI’m always dubious and protective about the greats and their work being remixed  however when executed respectfully and tastefully I have no problem at all with the modern “edit” which some deem as outright blasphemy..  Lets face it, all music is sampled and re-constructed is some way or another to create something new and original.

Midlake – Roscoe (Wizards’ Sleeve remix)

Midlake RemixedI heard this for the first time last month on two separate and strange occasions and was blown away, what an awesome cross genre track.  Groove Armada’s Tom & Andy also included it on their 2008 Late Night Tales Mix which is a marvelous selection of alternative nocturnal listening that is almost as good as their first mix of this ilk a few years back now on Another Late Night

Project Club – Dance With The Devil (Balearic Mix)

Evil ClownsI had been trying to track this down for many years and didn’t know the name for a long time and once enlightened I always managed to procure the wrong mix UNTIL NOW!  Perhaps it sounds dated and a tad novelty heavy with it’s sinister church bells but it reminds me of being lost in the acid  rave and I love it’s dark undertones which were perfect for those warehouse environments full of evil clowns.

Rio Rhythm Band – Carnival de Casa

Ian LovedayLast but most I pay tribute to a recent loss of one of the original house music greats who very sadly passed away recently.  Ian Loveday (aka EON and many other monikers) was a big influence on many of my friends and I when we first cut our club teeth and was a lovely bloke and will be deeply missed.  Below is one of my personal faves from his many productions, I wish I had some of his DJ sets to share..

Right you are then, Burning Ears Part 5 will follow soon, this weeks labor of love is now complete..x
